Q. I want to be able to eat my cake, are all of your cakes fake or can you make us a real one?
A. All of our cakes are real unless you ask us to make a fake one for you. At A Piece of Cake we feel that you should have your cake and eat it to. A fake cake was common in your parents day when the trend toward "bigger is better" wedding cakes clashed with the small serving size of fruit cake. Often only one tier would be real fruit cale and the rest would be fake.Q. Does a real cake cost more than a fake cake?
A. No, in fact they cost the same. The biggest cost in your wedding cake is the labour required to decorate it and whether we decorate a real cake or a piece of styrofoam it will take us the same time and cost the same.Q. My fiancee does not like fruit cake, do we have any other options to choose from?
A. Absolutely, fewer than 2% of our couples want fruit cake today, the rest choose from a variety of more conventional cakes such as chocolate and vanilla, but also include tempting options like our famous Citrus cake. Of course if you want fruit cake, we use a century old family recipe.Q. My grandmother has baked a fruit cake for every family wedding but will not be able to decorate it this time. Will you decorate it for me?
A. Yes. Many brides have asked us to decorate a family fruit cake and we have been able to accomodate their requests. The baker should meet with us to confirm details such as demensions and shape before baking and it should be delivered to us at least several weeks in advance to ensure that the cake has ample time to age.Q. What is the smooth icing that I see on many of your cakes, it doesn't look like my mothers wedding cake?
A. It's called rolled fondant and it's the icing that we specialize in. Fondant has an elegant finished quality that you cannot get with buttercremes or royal icings (which can only be used on fruit cake). We use other icings, but we can offer you more decoration options in fondant.Q. Will I be expected to deliver the cake to the reception site.
A. No. For a modest fee, we provide a full delivery and set up service at your request, provided that your reception site falls within our delivery boundaries. If you elect to deliver the cake yourself or if you are outside of our delivery area, we will provide guidance on what will work well and what to stay away from. This task is not for the faint of heart, but we successfully deliver about 250 wedding cakes each year.Q. Do I have to book you in order to request samples of your wedding cakes?
A. No, call ahead or drop in to order your complimentary samples to try at a booked apointment or to take home as a dessert to try in privacy. You may choose 4 combinations of cake and filling but we require a minimum of two days notice. Not sure what to try, ask us, we can steer you toward what is most popular.Q. When should we book you to do our cake?
A. Despite all of the conflicting rules of thumb you read in magazines, there is only one you need to remember, if you like the products and the service, don't wait, book it. Because of the perishable nature of our product, we are only able to handle a limited number of weddings each week and when we're full, we're full. Don't miss out, we have to turn away couples every year, if it feels right book your date with a $50 deposit. You don't need to figure out all of the details right away, once you're booked, the pressure is off and you can come back later to work out the details.
